Encrypted Smart Note-Taking App
The Challenge
Note-taking apps treat AI as a sidebar feature bolted on after the fact. And none of them take privacy seriously — your notes get sent to US servers for processing. Students, teachers, and professionals needed an app where AI is woven into the writing experience and encryption is the default, not an upgrade.
The Approach
We built AI into the core editing experience: highlight text to rephrase, summarise, or fix grammar inline. Behind the scenes, a RAG knowledge base indexes everything you write so the AI can answer questions citing your own notes. Every note is encrypted end-to-end with AES-256-GCM. All AI processing runs on EU infrastructure. The app ships as a native macOS desktop app with both Intel and Apple Silicon builds.
The Outcome
Edfolio is in production with active users. Notes are encrypted by default — not opt-in. Users can publish any note to the web with one click. The app is fully GDPR compliant with EU-only data residency. Multi-tenancy for educational institutions is on the roadmap.
Finally, a note-taking app that takes privacy as seriously as features. The AI actually understands what I've written before.
